Large Black Pigs
At Smallcombe Farm we also breed Large Black pigs. They are a rare breed which is traditional in the westcountry. We have kept them for more than fifteen years and have several rare bloodlines. We keep them to help protect the breed from extinction, to manage our overgrown brambly woodland and most importantly because they produce the best pork and sausages ever. The sows and piglets live outdoors, grazing on our fields and preventing the bramble and gorse from taking hold on the steep hillsides. We breed from our sows about twice per year, saving the best gilts for breeding and rearing the rest for pork and sausages. This means that only the best quality pigs are kept for breeding, ensuring that the Large Black’s famous long body, good hams and fantastic mothering abilities are preserved for the future. Our pigs are fed on locally produced barley and roots and we supplement this with gm free food from our local feed mill.
You can help to preserve the wonderful Large Black Pig by buying pork and sausages from us. We send pork and sausages to Rare Breed Free Range pork enthusiasts across the country by courier in insulated boxes. We also have Large Black Pigs available as weaners or as older breeding stock at most times of the year. Please contact us for more details of bloodlines and availability.

Wiltshire Horn Sheep
At Smallcombe Farm our steep hillsides are grazed by our pedigeee Wiltshire Horn Sheep. They are totally free range, and grass fed receiving virtually no concentrated feed at all. Our Lambs are born in april usually outside in our fields.and stay with their mothers until the autumn. The Wiltshire Horn Sheep looses its very short fleece naturally in the spring and do not need shearing or treating with chemicals to prevent fly strike. We have specialized in the Wiltshire Horn as they are hardy and produce fantastic tasting lamb, hogget and mutton.
We aim to spread the word about Wiltshire Horn Sheep as the ideal smallholders breed. They are ideal to graze after horses, and require less attention than the woolled breeds. We often have registered ewes and their lambs for sale as couples, and ewe lambs and ram lambs for sale for breeding purposes. Please contact us for more details of stock and availability.
